Today, I learned (or taught myself?) how fundamentally important proper drum production is to a mix. Picking out samples, tuning, EQing and compression can all be really boring and mundane work, but it makes a significant difference in the final product. I also tried out some new bass synthesis methods.

This is the result.

I haven’t properly mixed it yet, but that was almost 10 total hours of nearly straight work. I can tell already that the things I will make from here on out will be markedly better than my past stuff and I couldn’t be more pleased with my day.

I always tell myself that with every new song I make that I will broaden my horizons by trying something new production- or composition-wise, but today I think I actually gained something really valuable. It feels really good to know when you have made a huge step forward in your craft.
